How To Plant An Oak Tree

Planting an oak tree is straightforward. Follow these steps to give your tree the best chance to grow strong and healthy:

What You’ll Need:

• Young oak tree sapling or acorn from a certified nursery
• Spade or shovel
• Stake and tie (a wooden or metal post and flexible material to attach the tree to the stake) 
• Tree Guard and ties
• Mulch or compost
• Watering can

Steps:

1. Choose Your Spot
Find a sunny location with well-drained soil and enough space for your tree to grow (oaks can become large!). Avoid planting near buildings, pipes, or overhead cables.

2. Dig the Hole
Dig a hole that’s twice as wide and just as deep as the tree’s root ball or pot. This allows roots to spread easily.

3. Position the Tree
Gently place your sapling in the hole, making sure the top of the root ball is level with the ground. If planting an acorn, plant it around 2-3 cm deep with the pointed end down.

4. Backfill and Firm the Soil
Fill the hole with soil, gently firming it down as you go to eliminate air pockets.

5. Stake (if needed) and Tree Tie
Young trees may need support. Position a stake next to the tree and use a soft tie to attach it loosely, allowing for some movement.

6. Tree Shelter (if needed)

Tree shelters provide protection against mammalian browsing (deer, rabbits, voles etc) and enhance growing conditions in the early years.

7. Water Thoroughly
Give the tree a good soak after planting. Continue watering regularly, especially during the first two years.

8. Add Mulch
Spread a layer of mulch (wood chips, bark, or compost) around the base, leaving space around the trunk. This helps retain moisture and reduce the growth of weeds. 

9. Watch it Grow
Over time, your oak will grow into a powerful symbol of remembrance and renewal.
